Is the world ready for a Guinness milkshake?

A Guinness milkshake has launched in London, with the indulgence racking up fewer calories than half a bottle of wine. Tempted?

First there was the Baby Guinness trend (which does not actually contain Guinness). Now the famous black drink has been supersized by adding a big old dollop of confectionary to the silky Irish stout.

The Black Tap restaurant chain, with venues in Soho and Westfield Stratford, has added a Guinness milkshake to its menu and it’s going viral.

Blending half a pint of Guinness (or Guinness 0.0) with soft serve ice cream, the milkshake is topped with a drizzle of chocolate sauce and a cloud-like pillow of whipped cream for good measure.

According to The Black Tap, the concoction has been “officially approved by Guinness”, and while some critics are calling it “a monstrosity” (Evening Standard) and ‘stout-rageous’ (The London Economic), others are intrigued by the creation.

Crazy Shake

Should one wish, there is also the option to upgrade to a Guinness CrazyShake which comes with a “vanilla frosted rim” rolled in white chocolate chips, designed to look like the famous Guinness head of foam. The CrazyShake comes with a hefty slice of Guinness chocolate cake thrown on top, and its crowning glory is an extra chocolate brownie.

“Pint? Dessert? Cake? Why choose? From the glass to the blender, this is Guinness like you’ve never tasted it before,” says The Black Tap.

Lighter than air

Plenty have taken to social media to lambast the gut-busting attributes of the Guinness milkshake.

“Let me get a side of diabetes with my pancreatitis…” commented one LadBible reader on Instagram.

“Get those Brits out of the damn kitchen ASAP,” wrote another.

“And we wonder why everyone’s getting fatter,” added a third.

However, while not exactly lighter than air, the standard Guinness milkshake (not the CrazyShake) racks up fewer calories than one might expect. db estimates that the total calories in the drink are about 273 based on the following calculations:

Half a pint of Guinness: 105cals (a full pint contains around 210 calories).

One scoop of vanilla ice cream: 83 cals (based on Walls Soft Scoop)

A squirt of whipped cream: 40 cals.

A tablespoon of chocolate sauce: 45 cals

According to Nutracheck, the average half bottle of wine contains approximately 281 cals (white) to 285 cals (red), meaning the Guinness milkshake is actually a slightly less calorific option than its vinous peer. This does not, of course, account for the level of saturated fat or sugar present in the milkshake, which is likely to be higher than that in wine.

Those wanting to give the Guinness milkshake a go should hurry as it’s only available until the end of the month. And if you want to learn how to ‘split the G’ perfectly when drinking it, check out our guide here.
